Will Self and East London, links back ahead of BETT , IPEX

I don't read the Guardian Review word after word but I think I have taken in most of Will Self on Englishness. Suitably keen on the newspaper in print ( the new prices are intended to get the max from the UK cash cow until the global website is fully developed )

The problem for Englishness is that it tends to eat too much, and too indiscriminately – and that's not healthy for the ageing national character. Of course fish and chips (an inspired example of English praxis: Belgian fried potato mixed with Ashkenazi fried fish) was traditionally served in newspaper; but it isn't my partisan status as a journalist that leads me to believe that the English would have done well to hang on to the wrapping and discard the food. At least, I would've wished them to have done this if their great and passionate belief in the freedom and independence of their press wasn't – like so much that's English to the core – something of a myth.

Not sure this reads so well on a screen. I was hoping for some more about East London. Some time ago there was mention of hipsters and a video link so something continues from the newspaper timeline. see previous posts

YouTube in Will Self Cityscape

Words you can't use on the radio

Thing is, quite a lot has changed and ExCel is in a particular place. You might zoom in and out of it but my guess is that there is a digital world somewhere nearby that could be quite a lot different to the west and King's Cross. Of course it relies on good connections outside the UK.

Climate Change , TEDx Exeter, MOOC continued on Wild Show

Through the previous few posts I realise this is new stage in blogging around a weekly radio show. Not sure how it will work out, especially as I will be away next week and am not sure if Chris will be back. I know he wants to do a broadcast from a cafe. So the news from BETT may have to wait a week or so anyway. not that this matters much, clips on YouTube seem to take at least a month before they are noticed.

Sometime soon we will get to the Futurelearn MOOC based in Exeter, about Climate Change. This may relate to the TEDx at the end of March. Ecology has been a theme of the previous ones. Story so far via YouTube

Follow up question that may be discussed sometime, what will the university space be like if there is more in a MOOCish style and ecological pressure on buildings? So far Exeter is still investing in architecture, some of it as icons. The city centre is increasingly a focus for student accommodation.  Will it all be needed? Is the city about much else?

Meanwhile there is still uncertainty about the bookshop. Sorry, going off topic.

Critical Listening MOOC, sound test on Wild Show

Futurelearn has a current MOOC on Critical Listening. I tried out the questions on the Wild Show. This is another one which I need a lot of help with. When Chris gets back I will ask him about the technology involved. the idea is just about the listening, but I think I should know more about the studio.

Design Science relaunch follows Latour intro

This week Chris Norton was not well so I did about an hour more on the Wild Show than usual. He may be back next week, or JD will have to cover all of it as I will be at BETT. I am still waiting on the course to find out more about science but the visit by the Standup Philosopher encouraged us to have another look at Design Science and the DJ. ( search YouTube for previous clips )

This started with a YouTube video on the rise of the Science DJ and noticing that Design Science keeps cropping up. So I suggested to JD that there ought to be a Design Science DJ . So far we have got a bit diverted as he has concentrated on Design Science for and of the ( music ) DJ and also has insisted that science cannot cope with the levels of skill required. something like that, or he might also claim that he has no design. I think we are now ok with realising there is some sort of design, but till this show not at all sure about science.

Here are a couple of clips ( cannot include much music for copyright reasons )

We will come back to this later. Of course the real project is to be DJs for Design Science. Links to sound and video are very welcome. Also guests in the studio if you are in Exeter on a Thursday morning. It is mostly a music show but talk segments can stretch to half an hour or so.

Standup Philosopher introduces Bruno Latour, more later on Wild Show

There is a MOOC on Scientific Humanities with Bruno Latour starting on Feb 10th from FUN

I interviewed the Standup Philosopher on the Wild Show this week. Obviously we do not know the content of the course but I think his answers form a reasonable introduction. In another guise as the Storyteller he is often in the Phonic studio for the hour before the Wild Show so we will be able to update during the MOOC and he may be persuaded to stay for another half hour sometime. ( The Wild Show is mostly music so you may wait for the clips on Soundcloud or YouTube )

Please add comments or send mp3 or a link. We usually assume sound on YouTube or Soundcloud can be broadcast.

The Soundcloud version is enabled for download so feel free to edit and rebroadcast. It has a Creative Commons licence. Please link back to this blog post.

( b y the way, I am in bad status with Youtube following a request from Controversy Publishing. I loaded a video of a cover of one of his songs. So I cannot load Creative Commons to YouTube or over 15 minutes. Anyone who can find an actual human to contact about this, please let me know, the robot messages are not changing)

The Standup Philosopher is asked to introduce the work of Latour ahead of the MOOC on Scientific Humanities that starts Feb 10th. Seems to be a reasonable guess as to what the content of the MOOC may be. But please add comments. The Wild show may update , 10-12 on Thursdays Phonic FM, but mostly music.
