Apps on the edge for Analogue to Digital sound in #Exeter

Just a note about Analogue to Digital in Exeter yesterday. I am getting ready for IPEX in London so will have to come back to this week later and expand on some detail. I missed A2D last year so can't follow a trend as such, but I noticed that Yamaha did not show the Tonori-on . In conversation I discovered that it may be the app was too much of a success. The hardware cost about £800 so even a relatively expensive app was attractive for people who already had an iPad. So the hardware is no longer promoted at an event such as A2D.

My guess is that there are more examples of mobile devices round the edge of the studio.

IPEX will be even more in need of a hold on the context. Not only what is not being shown but also the companies not there.

But maybe not many posts on this blog till the end of the week. Some tweets as @will789gb

YouTube and copyright, new survey

Yesterday I was asked to fill in a survey when I uploaded a video with a Martha Reeves and Vendellas track. I think they are working towards some new alternatives so that whoever uploads can choose to either pay for copyright music or to share advertising with the copyright owner. so far I have avoided advertising though this may have to change if there is to be a budget for video production. I always recognise the claims so I think the advertising income is paid to the music publishers.

I have yet to get a direct message back from Youtube so here is my comment again

This video is a promo for Martha Reeves tour. Maybe Motown UMG should pay me. Only kidding. Previously I got into trouble with a cover of Prince song I Wanna Be Your Lover by Mama Stones House Band. It was ok for several months, then I got a heavy email and was restricted for length and Creative Commons option. I am a Prince fan too by the way. So my top request is for clear guidance when loading. Not a dispute much later. And please explain to Controversy Publishing how covers might be allowed and still help the catalog.

Just to repeat, I want some definite guidance at the time I upload.

Also, cover versions should be allowed I think. Not sure how YouTube could work with this. I realise any pub or street performance could be illegal but i think it is rare to get an actual objection.

This fortnight, #greenmanExeter #IPEX14 #TEDxExeter

Things are speeding up so this is a note about the fortnight. Green Man expected in Exeter this Thursday. IPEX starts next weekend, then back in Exeter for localised version of TED. Wild Show next week may have space for some print related content. This week is #greenman Exeter special so we will go walkabout and phone in.

Chat show format seems to work as links emerge from various elements. Green Man in Exeter may relate to climate change. So far the versions of TED in Exeter have had a strong environmental theme. Also the first MOOC from Exeter University on Futurelearn was about climate change. Some of this is public on YouTube and there may be another one.

IPEX and Cross Media have not a lot scheduled on sound but I still think video will have a large part in the social media around them. Sound is crucial for video so has to be a concern. Still not clear how much of what we create in Exeter cafes will be accepted in the studio. But we may record some to improve and use later. Also on Saturday this week is the Analogue to Digital event in Exeter. There may be a sub theme on desktop to mobile.

Surprise this week is that there is a follow up to the Learning Design MOOC. Starts next week same as IPEX so I can't put much time to it. But my idea for a course on Creative Commons and YouTube edits is still valid. My support group around the Wild Show is still there but things move very slowly. JD has closed down Windows XP ahead of the deadline and now mostly works from his Hudl. We can't find the option to choose Creative Commons on the Advanced tab. This topic could get out of proportion.

IPEX still the main event, but the context for Cross Media fits with a lot else.

What is Media Science? Analytics?

Still thinking this week about "Media Science". Found this on the website for Rochester Institute of Technology to describe what was their print courses. Now expanded in a blog post from 2012.

Changing the name of the School of Print Media to the School of Media Sciences will more accurately reflect the integration of arts and sciences as they relate to the use of integrated cross-media communications. RIT is adapting and aiding in the transformation of traditional print-centric operations into successful cross-functional solutions of future.

The School of Media Sciences’ mission is to innovate, transform and connect people, processes and systems that are essential to growth and success in the graphic communications industry.

But what makes this a science? Meanwhile I am a bit behind with the Bruno Latour course on Scientific Humanities but I will try to come back to it with "cross media" as a focus. I think it might be more of a controversy than a technology. The technology already exists, pretty much.

Meanwhile in today's Guardian Emily Bell writes about stats and online publishing. She claims that somehow cats falling off a sofa should not be valued in the same way as some other news items just because people are interested. My guess is that newspapers always sold advertising at different rates depending on serious content and soforth. But what strikes me is that what she describes could be a science. The stats are there, just needs a model of what the readers are doing.

The Answer in Exeter, three videos on YouTube

The Answer performed at the Phoenix in Exeter on Wednesday. I did a video of an intgerview with andy Brock from the Eurometal Express show on Phonic FM. We broadcast it on Thursday morning on the Wild Show. I don't listen to a lot of metal but am open to persuasion. I do know that the Eurometal Express show has an international online audience. The Wild Show I think is mostly for local FM, about as far as the aerial can reach from the roof of the Phoenix.

Notes so far. I did ask if it was ok to record the performance. Andy has suggested not uploading all of it. Takes a long time to render anyway. Will wait on feedback before uploading another one. YouTube robots recognised Nowhere Freeway as EMI Publishing but not Spectacular. I have acknowledged the EMI copyright so they will get the advertising income which could be massive. Both songs are already on TheAnswerVEVO channel. Worth adding the Exeter variation though and should link back to the interview. The sofa is just outside the office for the digital media bit at the back of the Phoenix. Usually fairly quiet.
