role playing scenario for commons course

I am way behind with my course work on the Commons for Leuphana. may catch up later but still have not found anyone to be active in my group. I am looking at the ideas and am working with others locally.

So here is my role play suggestion

role playing game

The characters

A band / solo musician

A blogger / radio presenter

Manager from record company

the issue is the use of Creative Commons for whatever reason, shared culture and / or as content marketing

situation one  fairly unknown band with demo track on Soundcloud , not Creative commons or download enabled but easy to find. New version coming up with better recording and added horns. Should the demo still be available? could it be Creative commons to invite new versions?

situation two well established solo artist objects to all cover versions of their songs and removes them from YouTube

blogger / radio presenter tries to work out what is expected in what can be played, linked to, used in social media, suggested to listeners / followers

manager concerned with what to do about previous social media when signing artists and also how to revive career of artists blocking remix etc.

#EX2019 Exeter with Fiber imagined five years on

It has been interesting how the conversation with Simon Egan is working out. Same issues as five years ago but appears to be making more sense. Sound much better in Phonic studio  but also tried talking to Jonah Hitchens at Mama Stones and this worked ok also. Things are not exactly resolved over time but there is more depth to cope with complexity. So I am thinking also about five years in the future. The Telegraph has reported that it is just possible Google Fiber could arrive in the UK. Maybe not in Exeter at first but in five years or so maybe something similar could happen. Broadband speeds increase by time ten or times a hundred.

Looks like Google is interested in television or whatever this becomes. This would include YouTube or similar, more video as social media. To be a city suitable for this sort of approach Exeter would need to get even more used to video and social media. This could include expanding those aspects from Phonic FM and other media. The University could do more with Futurelearn and other online courses. Most communication from the campus or any city would develop in similar ways.

I don't think there will be much printed local media. I find it easier to imagine the Guardian would just be on a Saturday. I think a local weekly would also be much more of a magazine, supporting a website or other online ways of breaking news.

Previously I posted about trying out demos of how images would look projected onto buildings. This sort of thing happens in other cities. I will try to check out the current Fiber cities such as Kansas City and Austin.

MOOC and reshuffle

The UK education scene may just start again. There appears not to be much of a fixed agenda from the new ministers. But then maybe this is just detox. Not sure.

Gove did go to BETT. The first time I thought his idea of not having a fixed set of courses for technology was quite a good one. But then maybe it just showed that he did not think the subject very important. The second time "coding" had all the attraction of a proper subject .

For the year in between Cable talked frankly about universities as a UK industry. MOOCs got a mention. Willetts has now gone and he was keen on the MOOC idea but I don't think there was ever any resource involved.

Whatever form the tech around the MOOC now takes it will involve education at all levels. Maybe something will be sorted out in time for the next BETT. Last time there was some LSE research but only in a special room that was very hard to get into so all I know is that there may be a high level group where things are being thought about. I still have not found any links online. The EU projects are much more public but I guess the current UK policy is to ignore them as part of the anti EU approach thought to appeal to the UK voters.

Meanwhile lots happening outside the UK. News will reach BETT somehow.

Disruption , Education , Journalism

Follows on from previous posts. Found this online which helps to explain background to the Observer writing from John Naughton suggesting disruption is now just something to move along from.

In Lepore’s view, Christensen invites criticism when, in The Innovative University, written with Henry J. Eyring, he subjects higher education (in this case, Harvard) to what Lepore calls “a wildly misguided attempt to apply standards of instruction in the 21st century to standards of instruction in the 17th.” But Robertson counters that “it’s just silly to say disruption is not going to happen to education. It sounds like something people said in the 1990s just before they went out of business.”

This is like Peter Scott in the Guardian announcing he will write nothing about the MOOC. Not that some other name will come along. The campus is not going to vanish soon.

But

Just repeating, what was Mode 2 about? Looking at the two books there is now a long gap in publication. Is there so much stuff outside Mode 1, best to just ignore?

Jonah Hitchens EP launch @wenotno @Phonic_FM

This week there may not be time to document all the implications of last week. Monday already so tomorrow is Tuesday. We don't do a lot of planning for the We Don't Know show from 12 to 2 on Phonic FM. But we have decided to visit the EP launch for Jonah Hitchens at Mama Stones in Exeter. Found one track on Soundcloud that we played last week.

This is like an extended tweet so I can explain some things for Jonathan Mahy, won't meet him till about 11 tomorrow.

We would still like to interview Stevie Wonder and ask him about how he copes not being able to see the audience. He seems to know what is going on very well. But so far we don't think we have found the real Stevie Wonder on Twitter. Also we'd like to know when the new CD or CDs are to be released. Somehow he visits the UK and there is no information available. We think that Motown Classic ( they are on Twitter ) is not about anything current and Island seems to be a group, maybe not that interested. We just mumble about what we don't know and hope for someone to tweet back.

Phonic FM is in the basement of the Phoenix so we rarely go out to other venues. this would be a chance to visit Mama Stones and maybe find something a bit different. Also I have done a search on YouTube, setting filter to this month, and find that Joss Stone appeared with Stevie Wonder during the North Sea Jazz Festival. So maybe she knows if there is a genuine Stevie Wonder on Twitter. Or at least somebody at Mama Stones may know a Twitter support person somewhere else. Some Twitter accounts seem not that direct, apart from Martha Reeves but I'm going off topic.

Not sure what we will be allowed to video or photograph at the EP launch. Maybe we will get something that can be used on the radio. But copyright is complex, not always clear what people want.

Meanwhile I have sent a tweet to Rod Temperton enquiring whether he would expect to be asked in advance if a band did a cover of Give Me The Night in a pub. Maybe more later, depending on the answer. Just a vague general enquiry at the moment.

A blues/funk song, has since been recorded again however this version gives a baisic idea! Music and lyrics by myself! recorded and mixed by Chris Tilke.
