Acrobat X shows Adobe has stopped development of PDF

My post on my drupa blog is more about Acobat X

Don't get me wrong. I like video, I like animation. But my interest in text and flat graphics can get a bit of a tight focus sometimes and it seems clear enough now that PDF is a finished work. Wrapping it in Flash is not very interesting from my point of view.

Probably detail on print etc will be in the drupa blog. The design on the IPEX one is old and no headline shows up.

QR code for Making Time garden outside Lancaster Nuffield Theatre

The Making Time garden outside Nuffield Theatre on Lancaster campus is coming to an end as a project. But it may continue to be there. According to the newsletter there was a meeting last Friday and the end is this Thursday. Anyone know what happens next?

I have added my photo to Tales of Things. I am still in Exeter so cannot place a printed QR code. But this would be possible and could link to something online. I think there is no harm in web versions of art work. this seems easier for the open air than in a gallery but we should continue with various tests.

Acrobat X not much on print, see blog for IPEX 2002

http://ipex2002.blogspot.com/2010/10/print-is-not-featured-feature-of.html

I have done a blog post for IPEX 2002 blog. Now that Acrobat X is out i shall do more on this blog and the drupa one. Both strated a while ago and are due to resolve sometime soon.

Adobe could be sensible to just forget about hard copy. Only the paranoid survive. Why worry about existing customers?

But meanwhile most people still use print some of the time. more on this later. This posterous blog attempts to be integrated but may sometimes just have a short link to another blog.

Sony Google TV builds the case for "EX1to4"

Nilay Patel blogged from the launch of the Sony version of Google TV

5:53PM He's hitting the Dual View button to put the TV feed in PIP while he searches and browses on the rest of the screen. This is a very familiar Google TV demo -- and it's yet to be explained why you wouldn't just do this on your phone or laptop while watching instead.

So some or most of the functions of Google TV already exist, spread out over several devices.

Searching on "EX!to4" is a way to relate to local TV. With no investment required anywhere in the UK so that should suit the culture policy. Of course there could be something more like a channel later if there was some support.

#likeminds on Phonic / Barefoot Radio

http://carlmunson.posterous.com/scott-gould-from-like-minds-on-the-barefoot-b-0

This is the link i was missing, the rest of this post is as it was

-------------------------

Scott Gould from #likeminds was interviewed yesterday on Phonic / Barefoot Radio by Carl Munson and Damien Houston. There is an mp3 attached to email but I am not sure where the best place is to find it. I am still getting used to the Barefoot approach after the New Exeter Radio Show. They are still on Phonic but Thursday not Friday and one hour only from nine to ten. The Barefoot Radio is also on BlogTalk Radio, selections from the archive most days and these are also archived. So the interview with Scott Gould will turn up soon. I will add a link when this happens.

Blog Talk is based in the USA. The ads are a bit loud but the hosting seems to work.

Scott talks mostly about the music events as an intro for the Autumn Festival. It would be great if the rest of the events get into similar forms of promotion.

I still think there is a need to relate these ideas to normal Exeter as it exists round the year. I will be studying some other venues as a control sample.

Carl is especially smooth and welcoming on this occasion. Damien just a bit off topic and quickly accused of being in the era of tin cans and bits of string. Well, someone has to represent Exeter as most people find it. I am thinking about cardboard boxes to demonstrate how wifi might operate around the BT building if the castle, library etc were to explore the full potential of the current situation. .

Acrobat 10 may leave PDF behind

I have found a bit more about possible directions for Acrobat. Kurt Foss has a blog as part of Acrobat Users and this links to a preview of what to expect from MAX, the Adobe meeting for developers and designers.

However it seems to be mostly about Flash. How to embed Flash content in a PDF. How to create a portfolio, a Flash intro and menu that contains several PDF files. How to use various types of code to create Flash menus. There is nothing I can see about PDF and XML or how to move text between various file formats.

Maybe I have just lost touch with where the concern is. I do realise there is a current debate about Apple TV compared to Google TV and other Apple / Flash choices. Only the paranoid survive and this challenge has to be met. But the same kind of message may not suit everyone. There are still people using Acrobat who are interested in documents that are mostly text with some flat graphics.

As far as I known there is no current development on MARS, the XML rewrite of the PDF format. Maybe this is not of great concern if workarounds exist for the problems identified previously. The tool for checking a PDFXML file can also be used for EPUB. There is very little info on how Adobe supports EPUB.

A PDF portfolio could be a better option than a zip file inside an organisation that stripped away zip attachments as a security risk. Also a PDF file containing Flash could get into some organisations where Flash is usually banned. These are interesting points but not advancing PDF as such.

I did try out portfolios when Acrobat 9 was released. I found that the people I sent them to were reluctant to have to upgrade just to read them. So I sent the PDF either file by file or with a PDF menu. Recently I notice Gmail has a reader for PDF attachments that launches quite quickly. It may be some form of Flash paper, I don't know.  Scribd is working on HTML5 but the current version is based on Flash. Thing is, they seem to actually like documents. On an Adobe site I usually feel I should be losing interest in text, animation is the only way to go.

There will be a session at MAX on "Dynamic PDF", I guess this is another word for Flash.

There seems to be no news about Acrobat.com or Buzzword. Acrobat 10 will be announced presumably to encourage upgrades. But is the dektop the only option? What versions of the software capability will be available online?

My guess is that as PDF and EPUB are now open standards, Adobe will not have the same energy for explaining how they relate to these formats. The challenge of Apple TV to the Open Screen is just too pressing. Acrobat will become another way to show off Flash. just like any other Adobe product.

Thing is though, as Acrobat moves on from PDF there may be some Acrobat users who start to look around.

18th October maybe Acrobat 10 info or something

Apparently something will happen on October 18th. Adobe have invited some journalists. There is a graphic at Macity

Translating the Italian through Google there appears to be some speculation that Adobe offers will involve Flash.

Well, what about PDF? There is not much info available. Blogs have not been updated this year.

There is not much need to add to the sense of mystery.

Guardian free films and Microsoft DRM

(previous post missed out the images)

The Guardian has a new approach to free gifts. Gone are the DVDs. Just a link to a download page.

However, I have trouble in getting it to load. I managed to install the Blinkbox downloader ok but it is surprising to me how little guidance you get on what is happening.

Now the main problem is Windows Media Player. It keeps telling me that I need an update. Itry to install it, nothing happens.

Version 11 for Windows XP

Another problem is that I don't know what the update is called. Trying from getting updates tells me there are none.

Microsoft Help mostly about privacy.

The Guardian had no explanation or guide to this offer. where is Jack Schofield when you need him? There has never been a free PDF to download, that would have been too simple. Suddenly there is a meg all at once.

Help please.

#EX1to4 as a basis for a local channel : Google and iTunes search TV

I have started another Twitter id - "EX1to4" . These are postcodes around here.  So the Tweets will be about particular space.

Clips on YouTube are global. But they could be a local channel as well. Recently I have uploaded several from St Sidwell's Open Day.

Also I have noticed TV products from Logitech and Apple. the Logitech device supports google TV but is not yet available in the UK. It is on order in the USA so is real. It seems to be a sort of browser linked to a TV so that you can watch web content on a bigger screen.

The Apple device is closely linked to the iTunes shop but it also includes YouTube. It is available in the UK though the  Exeter shop has still got the previous model on display this afternoon.

LA News Monitor Blog has a comparison. Things may change before this reaches the UK but the direction is towards one deviice with web search as a route to video. The aim of a local channel is still worth keeping in mind. But the way to gather material could be to work on whatever comes up through a postcode tag.

video from London Bookfair

Now that Graph Expo is a digital show there could be just as much interest in composition at a book fair.
Confused? Ask about fonts.

Adobe at Graph Expo, nothing happened?

Just checking, following blogsearch News search etc.

It seems that Adobe was not at graph Expo and there was no press release or presentation at another booth.

Any comments with other info are very welcome.

Variable data and PDF well worth promoting i would think.

Features in Acrobat 10? How would we know?

Andy Tribute video - Graph Expo a digital show

http://whattheythink.com/video/view.cfm?id=46967

More on the what they Think site but this seems to cover the headlines.

Usually my blog approach to a print event is to wait for what Andy tribute thinks and then link.

But I do have one quibble. He doubts if graph Expo needs to happen every year. The thing is, if it is a web related show then technology changes fairly quickly. If nobody brings heavy metal it is not too difficult.

For the UK an IPEX every four years is often enough. But we welcome video from somewhere else.

Links from Experimentality , recent update

During my talk at the Experimentality conference I showed some weblinks for sites that could be benchmarked. The Deming cycle is a learning approach and I think it has to be applied to something to make much sense. Recently it has been explained to me that email or other web interventions have to be positive to retain much attention. The audit has never been very welcome even in person so online there may only be space for looking at positive feedback on variation.

So here is an emphasis on some encouraging things I have found (in order as on previous slide)

Experimentality has a page for updates, easier to follow than the home page if you just want news

They are adding photos to some previous posts so the report on events is improved. Most new photos are on Picasa and they have a Creative Commons licence. I think clarity through Creative Commons is really useful. I sometimes assume reuse is ok and it turns out not to be.

Cloudworks has been updated twice over the summer as far as I can follow it. There are tabs to allow wider columns for comments or references. It may take longer to explore. A recent cloud is about how communities could develop around Cloudworks

I am trying to make more links and have updated clouds for IPEX and Online Information. The printing industry ( or communication industry now the London College of Printing has changed name) is in some relation to education so can probably find some space on Cloudworks. Quality is a topic that is already included.

The Networked Learning Conference have added video from the keynotes by Etienne Wenger & Yrjo Engestrom

Nothing embedded, just links to external sites, but the use of video is a development. Previously I found it hard to add graphics to the discussions and spent some time in the sandpit messing about with media. Perhaps it just is the case that academics assume text. I also have to accept that Adobe people assume video. All you can do is hope for some sort of exchange over time. I can get fed up in either direction.

There is not much news about a couple of the sites but still something expected later in the year

The CQI has launched a site for MoSO- a model of sustainable development. I am too close to this one to asess it well. I tried some video from a Kodak Zi8. the lighting is terrible.

The Critical Management site is still hard to navigate  I think but there is now a site for a conference next year.

Stream 17 looks interesting - "Digital Culture - Looking Through the Past Towards The Future" . You have to download a PDF to get to the text but maybe there could be versions online as well. Only one version of the text has to be fixed by April.

Komori raises questions on social media and marketing budgets

I am trying to report about Graph Expo in Chicago. Or repeat some outlines from IPEX in Birmingham. So far seems interesting enough. Not sure who reads this blog but comment welcome.

Comment welcome especially from people at Haymarket. Bloggers are not well situated to ask direct questions about media. But during the week different opinions can be found. Printweek has a view on print but this is not the only Haymarket publication. Will business to business move online? Will Printweek be the last to report it, should this ever happen?

Komori have published a guide to social media

( search on just Komori finds far too many results by the way )

found through Tweet by JennaKempie

There is a PDF for download from the Komori site. It mentions the cost of printing as an issue.

There is no Komori stand at Graph Expo. At IPEX they had a lot of space and  printed the show daily newspaper.

What to think?

#QRChicago finds YouTube

QR codes definitely made an impression at IPEX. Looks like Chicago will be similar.

Next week I shall try out #QRExeter and see what happens. Exeter UK that is, at least this is where I am.

QR codes in Chicago - #QRChicago -

There seems to be interest in QR codes as part of Graph Expo, as there was at IPEX.

This could be of general interest. What use to make of them? The print industry will be capable of presentation, but why?

The Twitter tag is #QRChicago -

PDF and variable data, contnues on IPEX 2002

I have started posting again on IPEX 2002

Recently I have mostly posted here, as it helps to integrate various things. There will be a lot of detail round Graph Expo in chicago during next week so please look at the IPEX 2002 blog if this is of interest.

The blog started in 2002 and so the name stays the same. Some posts may be on the drupa2008 blog. And there may be some links back here. Print shows do not change that fast. Some of the topics are much the same no matter what year it is. I realise I am in Exeter UK but I am trying to think Chicago.
