web to print should myoui consider a day pass? #andytribute

Web to Print – It is the Future for Print
By Andrew Tribute
I recently attended and spoke at the Xerox Forum, an event run in Berlin by Xerox Europe. I was speaking on a panel and was asked what I would recommend for printers to invest in within the next year. My answer was that I would recommend developing their Internet expertise in the area of web to print to make it easier for customers to work with them.

Like my other blogs this one boils down to linking to Andrew Tribute.

Web to print is now official and drupa seems closer than further away.

My only quibble is that whattheythink keep sending me these snippets that then demand a subscription when you click.

Could we just have one email a month with a really good bit? I do think about a day pass but need to clear my diary so I could concentrate for the day.

#therecipeexchange making a story , social media, blog formats, review group

Don't think previous blog made it into the review site

previously my Tourist photos were included but the format is for extended text in final edit. Maybe Facebook is closer to a blog but I need a few more words.

Recipe exchange as based in a village history. Social media, hacker party, Manchester open media, academics on YouTube. We still do not know what this show is about.

internet course material , what happened in the UK? @chrisjones

A tweet from Chris Jones leads me to a warning story in the London Review of Books

The danger is that private commercial operations will take market share from the existing UK universities.

Examples from the USA are described, in particular the University of Phoenix.

It is stated that "The assumption guiding these new institutions is that the internet provides the ideal vehicle for delivering course material to less well-off students, who can study at home as suits their schedule."

So I wonder about whether people at UK universities have thought about the internet for core functions - research, subjects that actually interest them, conversation, students with loads of money for PhD etc.

My impression is that a lot of the research so far has been forms of critique, reasons why the technology is not quite right and why things should carry on as usual. Learning technologists learn that technology is not the way to get published.

Disruption takes many forms. Can be internal for organisations, but not often.

This extended tweet is not aimed at @chrisjones in particular. Just follows on from his link.

lost track of critique , the cloud is here anyway

Previous post on Cross Media Live is still making sense.

There is now a communications scene of which print is a part. when the trade shows demonstrate this clearly is not known precisely but I will try to do a damage check around the first week of December this year. Bound to be "disruptive".

Meanwhile print culture continues. I find that Spacex still expect responses to art to be in text format. Networked Learning conference has limited video and no easy embed function in the message system.

Technology enhanced learning as a subject is still mostly about learning theory, not much technology as such. There could be more disruption.

The critique issues I have come across seem to have been looking at technology as if there was a choice how much it should be used. I think things have gone beyond a design phase. At Experimentality last eyar there was critique of the cloud but I think the technology is now so widely used that it has to be accepted as available. There are positive aspects but the critique base for a manifesto seems not to have followed this up. Maybe there are journal articles somewhere that I can't find. So I keep looking but meanwhile I think there are uses for social media that are worth getting on with.

scope of "print" shows should have changed already #crossmedialive

The Guardian Media pages include an interview with Gavin O'Reilly in which there is mention that both the Guardian and the Times are making losses. But this is not seen as important enough to explore.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/may/30/interview-gavin-oreilly-independent-media

There is nothing on an Irish web strategy for news. Printweek last week had nothing on Cross Media Live but repeated that Northprint attendance was 40% up.

I still think the decision to launch a Cross Media event was welcome and also shows a judgement on what is happening. Print media continue not to report print media all that well. If they just suddenly ended it would be a "shock". As in closure of web offset reported in Printweek.

September 2012 definitely too late. Discussion should start now, maybe IPEX World on LinkedIn.

#cqimoso Digital Aesthetics move along Plan - Do - Study - Act #therecipeexchange

I am still thinking about the idea of "Sense - Think - Act" as presented at the Spacex meeting on digital aesthetics. I am still not sure how this is aesthetics. Maybe there is a model or pattern in the mind that just seems right. Usually i find that Plan - Do -Check/Study - Act makes most sense. But you have to think about it. The action or doing is in two places or phases. Is it the designer or the machine that has this momentum built in?

Anyway, there is still a loop. The "sense" can just start again. The same events could be described with either model.

The idea of prototypes was much discussed. apparently the Arduino is rarely replaced with dedicated hardware. The idea that it can be frequently changed just takes hold.

So the Recipe Exchange needs to consider changes in recipes over time. This is not yet obvious on the website. Maybe the word "procedure" would help. I am trying to relate things to quality idea.

Meanwhile on YouTube #cqimoso is working well as a search tag. I started some clips during last year and there is now an excellent animated slide show as well as an intro on the official CQI channel. Numbers show there is some interest. So this is a reasonable start in using YouTube as a base for more social media interest..

Cross Media in the UK - will the issues wait till September 2012 #crossmedialive

The Cross Media site has been updated to show the first event in September 2012. I heard about this through LinkedIn on the IPEX World group but have now checked the public site.

http://www.crossmedialive.com/

Cross Media Live will be at the Business Design Centre in Islington, where Adobe Live happened on a couple of occasions. My guess is that Adobe attend fewer actual events as time moves on. Things could be very different in September 2012.

The event is intended for "design, marketing, brand owners and print professionals to meet and discuss key industry issues and the latest technology trends."

At IPEX issues included the future of business to business publishing in print. Will Printweek have moved entirely online by next year? Or if this is a bit fanciful, will there be a clear statement of Haymarket strategy?

There are so many possible views on the likely dates for technology developments. I think this is a significant month, May 2011, when the organisers of IPEX decided on a Cross Media event without "heavy metal" as suitable for London.

By the way, I am also interested in the canal walk from Regent's Park to the Olympic Site. To find the way, just head east. Except for the tricky bit where there is a tunnel from King's Cross to Angel.  There is a need for an A4 sheet with a clear map. Help please. One route is very close to the Business design Centre. Early in 2012 would be ok but this cannot wait till September.

Recipe as in performative : Exchange as in Open #therecipeexchange

The recipe Exchange at Spacex is getting more interesting. Some of it is at Spacex but it continues in Farringdon and other places. It could be seen as a way to represent what was going on anyway nowhere in particular.

second visit based my own recipe for going for a walk.

Coming up, the review group, a book about making things as connections, and a talk about open data in Manchester.

So far my photos and video have not included any people. I do realise there is more concern over image rights than over music for example. But still, given the nature of the show I hope there will be some talk on camera before the 9th July. If not at Spacex maybe in Farringdon or Exeter.

The reviews group will consider some fairly long text

Even though tablet computers have a fan base, the respect for text continues. Could this sort of dialog be done in clips for YouTube?

I'm on Phonic FM this Thursday - Wheelie Wild Show 10-12

Chris Norton is away this week so I will be doing the Phonic slot between 10 and 12. Fortunately JD will be there in support so there won't be too much silence while I work out how to start the music. He may also take over now and again. I expect to play some country soul and may slow down a lot. So some daytime disco could balance this out.

from capitolmusicgroup , sounds official.

Devon Soul is just a little bit country, there is more in there as well. This track will probably turn up in my second show, 9th June.

There will also be talk around the Recipe Exchange at Spacex and Farringdon. My own recipe is for a walk via bus to somewhere to eat/drink. Original recipe mentioned a pub but this can vary. There could be more documentation on how recipes change over time.

I have three Respect CDs. I may find another one at the Seale Hayne Record Fair. There is a Motown concert coming up at the Corn Exchange so I will also be looking out for Motown hit collections.

JD tells me that the equipment now hardly ever fails in streaming from YouTube.

My own stuff on YouTube has been a test of how a local channel may work. I will try to recap on this. It started with an attempt at a chat show during the Beer At The Castle event a couple of summers ago. Carl Munson turned up and invited me back to the New Exeter Radio Show. Same time each week but nearly everything changes.

#crossmedialive postponed to 2012 - source LinkedIn Ipex World

There is new info from Nick Craig Waller on the IPEX World group on LinkedIn.

He explains that the event has been moved into 2012 but will still be in London. The description is similar to what I would expect in the report in Print and Paper Monthly.

It is very disappointing that there will be such a delay. Comment can be linked to this event about the role of print in communication. The London college of communication was invited to the Digital Print World and Total Print Expo events so presumably will connect with Cross Media Live. They could make sense of the various words, "design" and "media" for example. Words like "print", "paper" ans "publishing" are still in there somehow.

I need to put a date on this event so it can feature in a timeline / story. Maybe the May editorial in Print and Paper Monthly. Maybe a conversation on the way back to London from digi:media in April.

The next digi:media is not till 2013 so the ideas could be part of the scope for drupa.

Meanwhile the IPEX World group on LinkedIn is working fine for me. You can ask a question and youdo get an answer. What more could a blog need?

Farringdon photos on Flickr , Spacex expanded phase one #therecipeexchange

I have tried out a bus trip to Farringdon. starts with the 52 bus out of Exeter. Actually I could just stay on the bus and arrive in Sidmouth fairly quickly. But my idea is to work out a walking route in time for the folk music in August. My recipe exchange contribution included the suggestion that East Devon is fairly flat as far as Budleigh. So far I think this is fair enough. I am going to explore Woodbury Salterton next and a route towards the river Otter. If the hills are too steep I will try further inland.

The White Horse is now a gastro destination, not sure if locals just drop by. The Otter beer is ok but I thought the sandwich pricing was such that I may try this another time. There is no bus stop that I could see so I went on to the Farm Shop where a pasty is reasonably priced and there is seating outside. Also a bus stop so the 52 will get you back to Exeter.

Two of the photos are from another visit to Spacex. One on travel might still relate. My next trip could feature companions. Can I do video clips of the conversations? We could visit the site of the science park via the new bridge. Will this bring much change to the countryside? Do most people just commute anyway? The notice board shows an awareness of what is happening over quite a wide locality. What about protection science? Is there a genuine danger around stray cats or is this just rhetoric?

Recipe Exchange prompts social media review recursion #Spacex #therecipeexchange @spacexgallery @Helen_Pritchard:

The Recipe Exchange exhibition at Spacex takes the form of sharing applied knowledge. Some events already happened in Farringdon. The website continues during the next few weeks and new recipes are also possible as hard copy posted at the gallery.  "recipes" can be for any useful activity. I have added one for catching a bus to a country walk and pub sandwich. It may be amended following tests.

At a talk on Saturday Helen Pritchard compared the Recipe Exchange format to the Wikipedia and open source software. Events may have some of the same spirit as a party for hackers and net artists. It is also possible that reviews will have some of the same qualities. There is now some comment on Facebook and a reviews page based on Tumblr.

I took some photos which are now on Flickr. I hope to do some video soon at various locations.

Most of the photos are of book covers. Permission to photograph people is more complicated. For a limited number of days the books are available at Spacex. But one obvious question is to ask how much they usually cost and is there a free version online? There is web access also and one estimate mentioned on Saturday was £50 for title only available in hardback. Maybe I misremembered this already.

there is some free text here, to be compared with the hard copy at Spacex some time later

Making is Connecting by David Gauntlett has a page with sample chapters and several links, including free stuff.

Italian design and EU funding through Framework. A few years old now but some of these ideas have been around for quite a long time.

I am interested in the Recipe Exchange as connected to quality systems and action learning. Documnet control is not always regarded as a fascinating subject but the content here is interesting enough to hold some attention. A recipe is similar to a works instruction, a document that exists at an early stage in a process. Later documents could include complaints about the resources or suggested changes in the instructions. For example I have suggested in my own recipe that the walk to the coast from Farringdon via the river Otter is pretty much flat. No steep hills to worry about. This may be modified when tested.

Northprint 40% up but Southprint is now cross media #crossmedialive

Printweek reports that there is a 40% increase in visiters to Northprint this year.

But I cannot yet find a mention for Cross Media Live as reported in Print and Paper Monthly. If there is a link please let me know.

As far as I know there is no Southprint or Total Print Expo. Next week I will do more of a trawl on past links. Is London very different to Harrogate? Reports soon on levels of interest in brands and communication choices.

trust, Guardian Talk, future Manchester #guardiantalk

Word of mouth and trust is important and many people use this as a filter.

There is some info turning up on Future Everything in Manchester. I don't think there was much mention of Guardian Talk and what happened. I think this has to be spoken about before any other communication with the Guardian is going to work all that well.

Otherwise it is just another example of a cover up.

Print and Paper Monthly comments on Cross Media show in London next November #InformaEx #crossmedialive

The May print monthly has an editorial by Andy Knaggs on the new show from Informa Exhibitions. He recalls a conversation with Trevor Crawford of Informa on the way back from digi:media at Messe Dusseldorf last November. Reportedly, Crawford said-

"I would question whether it was actually a cross-media event. For me it didn't do what it said on the tin."

In a later news item Crawford states that "We're not going to have machinery there. The moment you introduce that to a show that's meant to be cross-media, you turn off two thirds of the people you're trying to attract."

So this could be very interesting. The current website just has PDF to download but IPEX World has shown what can be done through LinkedIn etc. The floorplan shows that all the stands will be reasonably small, similar to the dip - drupa Innovation Parc. In my opinion the dip has been way ahead of anything at IPEX as a developer meeting point. Perhaps the London discussion will suggest some possibilities and the working models will appear sometime later.

This event is significant as it comes from the legitimate printing industry. A similar editorial from Simon Eccles would not be as surprising.

Future Manchester focus on data - imagining Wray in East Devon #futr #spacex #recipeexchange

Future everything has started in Manchester. There is a large interest in open data

http://futureeverything.org/art/data-dimension/

I woke up during last night to hear Click on the World Service. I did go back to sleep but not before hearing a claim that there is no data divide in the UK because for example there is bandwidth in Wray.

Some of this is true but is it for all the UK?

Compare and contrast if Wray was in East Devon. The recipe exchange starts this coming weekend as in something at Spacex but what it is still a bit of a mystery.
