IPEX comment on LinkedIn

I have been invited to write for LinkedIn so have done this on IPEX.

K Print week is at the end of the month. So I had intended to update on IPEX anyway. I say "update", actually I still have not done that much in writing about it. there is still a lot of delayed response I think. Print media do not often report trade shows anyway.

More later about the Guardian. There is a page about the MOOC and Futurelearn this week. About a year late or so. But maybe sometime soon something similar about newspapers.

Myth and Creative Commons

The final task of the Commons course is to pull all the elements together. So this is a start, as a blog post and to be copied to the Leuphana site.

The trouble is that I am going off the track. The course content has been very useful as a challenge to assumptions about the commons. I now realise that any attempted commons exists in a society and there are other challenges and forces at work. The history of enclosure is very relevant and a useful warning. In reality there is a high chance that some form of enclosure will happen unless there is a strong struggle to protect a commons space.

I have tried to relate these ideas to Creative Commons as a legal option on YouTube, Flickr and other sites. Over time in most social media there has been a trend towards advertising and monetisation. The original culture is still part of the scene but may be obscured. It is hard to establish the basis for Remix on YouTube in the context of the extra adverts.

So what is taking me off track is an awareness of myth and delusion. During and after the Sidmouth Folk Week I have been noticing the Myth Circle on Facebook and the related blog. Most of my understanding comes from conversation though. I have also done several radio shows including folk music. I now realise that an FM station such as Phonic is paying to the PRS to cover all the copyright issues. so the freedom of presenters to mix things up is conditioned by this, not a model for normal life. Performers of cover versions in pubs are also covered by PRS paid by the premises. What will happen with social media? It may be that the promotion function is already understood by the record labels.

But even if the Commons as a resource for content is not actually happening it remains important as a myth. The myth allows creativity and appreciation.

More later, just thoughts so far.

Quality academic papers seem to be outside UK

I got an email from Academia.edu with highlights from the week. They have got this about right. If it were not for the Seale Hayne beer festival this weekend I would soon study these in detail ( see copied description below).

One thing I notice is that none of these are from the UK. On the Academia site I have put links to four of my papers at conferences in Lancaster. I find the connection between learning and quality is hard to make in the UK as the Critique stream as established quality as something to object to. They probably see these papers below as neo-liberal rhetoric or managerialism.

The one on the Spellings Commission includes a take on Deming. It considers a range of views on where US universities are heading, but at least Deming ideas are included.

This may be a random sample but my impression is that there is more inclusive study around quality outside the UK than I usually come across. In practice this will mean more looking online than UK travel.

should find these ok, sorry no time for links

Links from Phoenix and Spacex for chat about remix and images

Previous post had some details from a street photograph of poster advertising the SENSE show at RAMM. I still think this will be ok, and also it turns out that other images are also available. The Phoenix gallery also use Flickr and when I loaded mine I noticed there is a set from the current show - Hinterland by  Rachel Busby and  David Webb. However I'm not sure what you can do with them or how many people know they are there.

Also today I came across a tweet about "A Song To The Tin" , Mixcloud listen again for the Culture and Review show on Phonic FM.

So there is more online content than I expected. Maybe there always has been and I missed it. Or maybe things are changing. i still think there is more remix allowed with sound than with images. It will be interesting to talk to people during the beer festival at Seale Hayne next weekend. I don't suppose the gallery space will be closed down in case some beer is spilled.

Meanwhile there can be variation on folk song.

YouTube links, #mtw3 #Deming20 ahead of #beerfestchatshow

My summer relax mode is getting slightly disturbed by a flash or two of future action, or something to return. Having done a Youtube playlist for the Seale Hayne beer and music festival I am reminded of the playlists for Edwards Deming and the Management At Work conference. Both can be extended later. The great thjing about a beer festival is that it encourages a speculative state of mind. not sure how much substance there will be to the chat show aspect but there could well be a few ideas to return to later. Similar with trying to translate a conference or meeting into a video playlist. In theory this can continue with other social media or real events as in defined space and time.
