Connections and Books from TEDx Exeter

I have done two Flickr sets from TEDx Exeter. They cover the stand for connections and also the pop-up Blackwells bookshop. I think both will be mentioned on the Wild Show over the next few weeks. There is still not much awareness of the local TED connections as far as I can tell. Both events have sold out quickly through the university so I'm not sure people in central Exeter know much about it.

The bookshop continues to be of interest. Why did it not continue as part of the new forum? Maybe books are vanishing but there still seems to be support. What is the case for a library? What will happen on the high street?

I'm not finding it easy to make a link that shows up.

Ustopia continued

I have been looking back at the website for the Institute for Advanced Studies at Lancaster. I still think about Experimentality and learning loops as in Deming. Found this quote again -

Programme Director, Bronislaw Szerszynski , says:
"the idea of the experiment carries many of modernity’s greatest hopes - and greatest fears.  We need a concerted attempt to understand the nature of experimentation, in order to explore how we might use it to shape the future in more benign and inclusive ways"

.Ustopia might be useful as a way to include hope and fear in the same package, see previous post. I hope to be in Lancaster next month. As I remember the space where the IAS was is now a project about literacy and postcards. I wonder what the critique of postcards was at the time, ( Edwardian UK ) ?

Ustopia still fits well with a radio show approach. Balances out different views and the presenter can start with a mix.

YouTube arrives in Will Self cityscape

Reading the Guradian there has been a bit of a breakthrough. I have been wondering about the Review and how they reflect the internet. A couple of weeks ago there was a claim that mobile phones were bad for plots so should not be mentioned in a novel despite being 40 years old. Sorry going off topic, what is scifi and what is mainstream if claiming to be 40 years ago to start with? The historical novel is a genre? anyway back with the cityscape.

Will Self reviews "Cities Are Good For You : The Genius of the Metropolis" by Leo Hollis. Some of thje themes are familiar from my attempt to study the MOOC from Leuphana, see previous posts. but the breakthrough is that Will Self refers to YouTube and a song about the "creatives" of East London. I think I have found the right one, he has not gone so far as to offer a direct link.

So far I have not found much  about the city as a virtual space or how design of virtual aspects relates to some blended result. It mostly comes from an architecture course I think. But here is a video for East London. It may describe an area along the route from King's Cross to the Olympic Park and then to ExCel in time for IPEX, only a year or so away.

A printed review should try to find more of this sort of thing.

Wild Show Comment on TEDx Exeter / News from the Sun

I have put a voice clip on YouTube from the Wild Show today. Only a couple of minutes, filling in while Chris Norton finds some more music.

I am guessing TED X in Exeter tomorrow will have at least some space for technology as positive. I find a lot of academics are worried about neo-liberal rhetoric and commercial challenges to traditional university offers. The Northcott Theatre is on the campus so some of this may be part of the discussion. A visit to the Phoenix will widen the scope.

I don't think the artwork is especially hand crafted, whatever is said in the guide. The flat images could be reprinted by digital technology without losing a lot. Just my opinion, feel free to comment. The video could be on YouTube, I have not yet checked what else might be there. If the work is a collage from other sources I think it can be open in itself.

Comments welcome or mp3 or there may be space for guests on a Thursday morning , 10 -12.

Background

I have been trying to promote the 2012 version of Sparkle. we played the soundtrack on the Wild Show during last year. The soundtrack CD was in Exeter HMV at the time of the USA movie release but then vanished. UK movie release was limited, maybe in Bristol for a week, nothing in Exeter. I have now seen the DVD and persuaded someone else to watch it so I understand the reputation as being stereotyped or “cheesy”. However I still think the music is great and the plot sort of works. Also I found the original on DVD in HMV. It was quite cheap but I think they have gone. The Campus Cinema at Exeter University might have shown it but it failed to fit in the promoted schedule. I have also found a Kurt Vonnegut talk about the plot structure of Cinderella and recognise where Sparkle is coming from. Especially the second one. Cheesy or not the plot is consistent and the placing of music fits the structure. I think students might accept it as an example of something even if they did not like it as a movie. So I proposed three or four lunchtime selections for educational purposes, including the Kurt Vonnegut talk. This might generate enough interest  for a ticketed screening. The Black Box at the Phoenix could be a venue but they need a letter of permission from the distributor. I have left a phone message with Sony Europe but I don’t think they are that interested. No reply so far.

So my next idea is to do another script for a folk version. This might get more interest here in the South West of England. Also there are some locations so there could be some test sections on a limited budget.

The approach will be very open, Creative Commons for the script. But there may be a copyrighted version later. So this may get messy if I borrow your ideas. To be perfectly clear the sequel - The Seven Year Contract - could well be just done as a tightly copyrighted operation starting with a novel. You have been warned.

Notes so far

Opening sequence during Sidmouth Folk Week. Three sisters in a folk group camping somewhere nearby. Parents staying at the Bedford Hotel where they meet the sisters in the bar. It becomes clear the parents know several people in traditional folk and do not approve of electric guitars or drums. Mother insists on this the most, father seems a bit more relaxed. The sisters say they are going to the Anchor but actually head for Dukes where the music is on the fringe for Sidmouth.

The sisters are Patti, lead singer very concerned with getting more gigs ; Dionne, has done some session work and demos , interested in studios ; Cindy , not too sure about what to do but taking things in.

They come back to Dukes the next day for an open mic and meet a Manager type from Bristol. He claims to be able to get them gigs if they add some drums etc.

Over the next few weeks several gigs in Devon with new songs. Patti becomes even more ambitious. Dionne has an argument with two songwriters from Cornwall. They ask her to demo songs she thinks are based on her own experience and words. But they won’t include her with a credit. Cindy tries to find out more about recording technology.

The parents continue to attend folk clubs and invite the sisters along. Some songs are featured in a traditional manner. Mother turns out to be the better singer.

The Manager arranges a sequence of gigs in Bristol that are a big success. But parents object to the style. They also object to the contract that the Manager suggests. The mother is very sure it should not be signed as she has seen other contracts before.

actual dialogue , more to follow

Father  : Don’t worry about it. This is only for seven years.

After much discussion only Patti is prepared to sign the contract. Dionne decides to take a law degree and then sue the songwriters. Cindy has decided she needs to know more about music technology. She has the wrong A levels to get on a course so has to go back to college. Downbeat ending.
