Hipsters, East London, words you can't use on the radio

IPEX will be at ExCel, close to where the River Lea joins the river Thames.

I have been trying to find a walking route from King's Cross for some time. I do now know how to follow the canal to Islington Green so the Cross Media occasion will be fine. The route continues to the Olympic site but I still don't know how the final section works out.

(Meanwhile I have done something in Crowd Party, see previous posts. This could work well enough meanwhile)

Maybe the White Building on the west of the bridge is a good spot to meet meanwhile.

Previously I linked to a Will Self link to YouTube through the Guardian

http://hellospiders.com/blog/2013/4/21/youtube-arrives-in-will-self-cityscape

If I mention some of this on the Wild Show, Thursday morning on Phonic FM I will probably use the word "hipster".

Meanwhile an infographic for a show about Consumer Electronics in the UK claims that East London is the "largest cluster of innovative tech startups in Europe".  Probably some people from Berlin will turn up at IPEX so it will definitely be local as well as global.

Myself as IPEX VIP

I have been selected as one of the VIP guests at IPEX, the global print and communications event planned for ExCel next year. Less than a year to go.

I am suitably inspired and starting to think more like my fellow guests who I imagine take a longer term view of the UK and probably come from somewhere else. I realise I may upset some people with some of my views but a blog is there to explore things. Probably there will be something constructive in time for the actual event.

There is enough news about cancelled stands (booths) to show that this is a very significant occasion. The London College of Printing changed their name to include the word Communication. Gradually it becomes clear what this means. Print is part of something else.

Print culture could change in various ways. So far I find the print Guardian is still trying to carry on as if not much has changed. More on this later. Here is another way to describe things and avoid repeating myself too often. I don't think there will be much equipment on show from manroland. As memory serves at the NEC last time they were there but not with equipment. ( I'm not sure if they are booked for ExCel but I am assuming lots of people may or may not be there officially but will probably have a look, including Adobe and Apple )  Some time ago Guardian Media Group spent about £500m on new equipment for a new page size. This is not the sort of thing that will happen again.

So speculation about the Guardian ending a print version Monday to Friday is not that significant in this context. On the planet much is changing. Here in Exeter we now have a local paper that is just on a Thursday. I think it would be better on a Sunday to complement the Western Morning News but maybe the presses are doing something else at the weekend.

The Cross Media Live event is on a relatively small scale but needs to be very sorted out by the time it concludes.

This City's Centre, plug for video so far

This week there is the first performance part of the This City's Centre project. Tickets seem to be at a variable price.

I have been distracted by various projects so have not done much to promote the YouTube clips from the first event. But it is time to get a bit ready. The RAMM show starts in July.

Most of these clips are from the Wild Show on Phonic FM, guest Volkhardt Muller.

Blended Learning, the Guardian moment

I can't find it online but yesterday there was a supplement in the Guardian Education printed version that reported on apprentice alternatives to degrees. Some people took this route to avoid debt and others seemed to find it helped them to learn. Page 7 Janet Murray wrote about meeting two students who kept working through their studies. This includes a report that more colleges and higher education institutions offer distance learning including blended learning - " a mix of distance and face-to-face " . this is a rare mention for blended learning. Too often I think we just get a rave about the dangers of the Mooc or robots replacing proper staff.

So the topic of blended learning has arrived. But it may have to wait for another supplement to go much further, just as the mobile phone companies are prompting discussion of citizen journalism.

Jeff Jarvis is still expected in the UK around July. I hope education is in the scope and some comment is repeated on Buzzmachine.

Blackwells, Nook, Exeter, Lancaster

I still have not looked at all the photos from Lancaster. But I have done a collage of the Nook stand in the campus Blackwells with the last year round bookshop on the campus in Exeter. I think the pop ups with texts for the start of term are not really the same. So this a bit of shifting in time and space. Blackwells have not really promoted mobile devices until recently. The Waterstones on Lancaster campus did not do much either. Anyway the city centre has been doing a better promotion for ages. So this shift in the picture is about the recent past. ( When libraries and journals will adjust remains to be seen)

I think you can get a Nook through Blackwells in Exeter but as there is no clear bookshop you may find John Lewis has a better display.

By the way, yesterday on Wild Show I said I would try to find Having a Wonderful Time and it is available so there will be another J G Ballard story next week. If you can't get Phonic FM this is the direct link.
